Read the product specification
Wood-plastic, mineral-filled and other composites vary in expansion, span, weight and fire performance. Use the manufacturer’s system limits for posts, rails and gates.
Expect appearance to change
Colour may weather or fade, and dirt can collect differently on textured surfaces. View aged installations where possible rather than relying only on a new showroom sample.
Plan for heavy panels and repairs
Composite infill can be heavier than wood or vinyl. Gate frames and posts may need additional support. Confirm whether one damaged board can be replaced without dismantling an entire run.
Check the decision before committing
Before ordering or approving work, explain in plain language how the proposal handles read the product specification, expect appearance to change and plan for heavy panels and repairs. When the explanation depends on phrases such as “it should be fine,” identify what measurement, document or product specification would replace the guess.
Review the plan from both sides of the fence and through every season. Access, drainage, snow, vegetation and future repairs often reveal problems that are not visible in a front-elevation drawing.
Questions to settle
- What site fact or local rule confirms the approach to read the product specification?
- What trade-off created by expect appearance to change is acceptable, and who accepted it?
- How will plan for heavy panels and repairs be inspected or maintained after the fence is complete?
- Which part of the decision depends on a manufacturer, local authority, utility service, surveyor, contractor or engineer?
- What changed condition—soil, grade, use, neighbour access, climate or damage—would require the plan to be reviewed?
Records worth keeping
Record the manufacturer, product line, colour, coating, grade, fastener specification and supplier so future repairs can match the original system.
When to pause and get local help
Pause the purchase when the supplier cannot identify the complete system, exposure limits, compatible hardware or replacement parts. A sample panel is not enough evidence for the whole installation.
